MEET THE TEAM

As a little girl, I remember the excitement I felt whenever a teacher needed volunteers to carry boxes. As always, I would be the first to raise my hand, only to feel disappointed when the teacher chose all male volunteers. I also recall hearing phrases like "Man up!" and "Sit like a lady!" These experiences made me feel incapable as a little girl, and I do not want any other student to feel the same way.

This vision led me to start 'Unlabelled.' as a project for my grade 11 Social Innovation class at Jean Augustine Secondary School, but it has become so much more than a project to me. I was given the opportunity to run a professional learning workshop with staff at Jean Augustine, and shed some light on the issue of gender inequity from a student perspective. I have continued Unlabelled. into my grade 12 year, and am currently running Unlabelled. workshops at schools across the Peel District School Board.

Through Unlabelled. workshops, I wish to make schools safe places for students to feel comfortable having conversations that are normally avoided due to social pressures. Overall, Unlabelled. has become a local movement for us to come together and work towards school environments free of gender roles, stereotypes, and labels.
